Why join the Librarians' Guild?

What is a union?

Joining a union simply means that you and your colleagues have a strong voice in your workplace because you negotiate important elements of your working conditions together. This means securing wage increases, health care, workplace safety enhancements, and more reasonable and predictable hours. The union also works with management to settle disputes that employees and their managers are unable to settle individually.

What does the Librarians' Guild do?

  • Negotiates MOU's (contracts) for Librarian I through Principal Librarian II
  • Represents librarians during grievances
  • Meets regularly with Library and City management to address health, safety and other workplace concerns
  • Provides regular professional development events (such as practice promotional interviews)
  • Supports relevant political and community causes/events
  • Hosts regular networking/social events

How the Guild is working for you

  • Fighting for well-paid jobs and cost-of-living increases for all librarians
  • Fought for Measure L to mitigate staff layoffs and stabilized the library's budget for future generations
  • Sunday hours: work for 5 hours, get paid for 8
  • Negotiated for multiple night and bilingual bonuses
  • Intervenes on behalf of members with payroll, benefit, and accommodation issues
  • Ensures funds for staff training and ergonomic equipment
